METHOD AND AN APPARATUS FOR TRANSFERRING A LOG OR A CANT TO A SAWING LINE

A method and an apparatus for transferring a log or a cant to a sawing or canting line is provided, in which while the log is positioned with regard to the feeding plane, the gripping member of a log carriage moving parallelly to the feeding line is caused to grip the log or cant without changing its position, whereafter the log or cant is moved to the feeding level and fed towards the sawing or canting machine by means of the log carriage. The gripping means of the log carriage comprises jaws to be placed on the opposite sides of the log. The jaws are movable along overhead rails transverse to the log and connected to one another by an actuating cylinder so that their position with regard to each other is determined only by the cylinder, but their position with regard to the log carriage is indefinite between the stops at the ends of the overhead rails, until the jaws are stopped when they reach the log.
