PURPOSE: To obtain an improved pediatric lipid emulsion comprising a source of linolieic acid, a source of linolenic acid, a source of docosahexanoic acid, a source of medium chain triglycerides and a source of oleic acid, capable of being enterally or parenterally administered and suitable of requirement of nutriment in a neonate and a pediatric patient. CONSTITUTION: This improved pediatric lipid emulsion comprises a source of lnoleic acid, a source of linolenic acid, a source of decosahexaenoic acid (a source of DHA), a source of medium chain triglycerides and a source of oleic acid. The DHA in the emulsion preferably supplies <5.0% calories of the fatty acid in the caloric content supplied by the emulsion. The ratio of the linoleic acid to α-linolenic acid is preferably less than 10:1. The ratio of (n-6) to (n-3) fatty acids is preferably (1:1) to (about 5:1). The medium chain triglycerides is included in 50% or less in terms of caloric content. The γ-linoleic acid is preferably included in 15% or less in terms of the caloric content. The α-linolenic acid is preferably a soybean oil or a canola oil, and the emulsifying agent is preferably a borage oil, a seed oil of Ribes nigrum or an evening primrose oil. |
