Plate-like barium ferrite particles with a solid solution of zinc on the surface thereof, suitable for use in magnetic recording media, have an average particle diameter of 0.05 to 0.3 mu m, a coercive force of 2.39 x l0<4> to ll.94 x l0<4> Am<-><1> (300 to l,500 Oe) and a magnetization of not less than 55 Am<2>,/kg (55 emu/g) in a magnetic field of 7.96 x l0<5> Am<-><1> (l0 KOe) and which are represented by the following formula (I): BaO.n[Fe1-2xCoxTix)2O3] .........
