<p>PURPOSE:To prevent the contamination of molten metal by oxygen and obtain the molten metal, low in oxygen content and high in purity, in the method of smelting an active metal such as Ti, Ti-alloy and the like through induction skull smelting method employing a split type water-cooled copper crucible. CONSTITUTION:Refractory cement, containing at least one kind of principal constituent selected from a group consisting of CaO, ZrO2 and Y2O3, is used as refractory cement for filling into the slit part 1B of a split type water-cooled copper crucible 1. CaO, ZrO2 and Y2O3 are very stable chemically and, therefore, the refractory cement having the principal constituent of CaO ZrO2 or Y2O3 will never generate reaction substantially even when the refractory cement is contacted with an active metal such as Ti or the like whereby the contamination of the molten metal due to oxygen or the like can be prevented.</p> |
