Ordinary carbon steel may be made substantially equal to galvanized steel in corrosion resistance after painting with a modern flexible paint of the type preferred for coil coating in the appliance industry, by first treating the steel surface to deposit a small amount of nickel on the surface and then drying into place a coating of a composition containing hexavalent chromium and preferably also trivalent chromium, silica, and phosphate ions. |
