The present invention relates to a process for resolving an enantiomeric mixture of alpha -hydroxy acids or derivatives thereof through esterification and subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis of the alpha -hydroxy acids or derivatives. The present invention also relates to purified alpha-hydroxy acids or derivatives and methods of use thereof.
