A recording medium containing multimedia data streams is managed. Portions corresponding to a predetermined playback time in a first image and voice da ta are managed as first units (EU). Minimum units of data of the first unit (EU ), which can be reproduced independently, are managed as second units (VU). The first units (EU) have the same playback time, while the second units (VU) ha ve the same playback time. Position information about the second unit (VU) in t he recording medium is considered to be management information about each of th e second units. The position information about the first unit (EU) on the recording medium is determined according to the position information about t he second unit (VU) on the recording medium.
