PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dielectric barrier discharge lamp with an external electrode and an internal electrode which has a uniform luminance distribution in the longitudinal direction. SOLUTION: In the dielectric barrier discharge lamp having a glass tube 1, internal electrodes 3, 4 inside the glass tube 1, external electrodes 5 outside the glass tube 1, a structure 6 is provided in which the electrostatic capacity formed between a surface on the glass tube side of the external electrodes and a surface on which a discharge medium contacts the glass tube is changed in the region where the discharge inside the glass tube transforms from a contraction positive column to a diffusion positive column. By this structure, deterioration of luminance of the diffusion positive column after changing from the contraction positive column to the diffusion positive column can be suppressed, and the luminance distribution in the longitudinal direction of the glass tube 1 can be made more uniform.
