PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber capable of developing a predetermined damping function depending on an expansion position while improving its installation property. SOLUTION: In a bypass line outside a cylinder body 1 bypassing damping valves 21, 22 arranged in a piston body 2 inside a cylinder body 1, there are provided input shafts 51, 61 to the front end of which thrust is input from an input means 9 having opposed control valves 5, 6 arranged in parallel, poppets 52, 62 which are continuously provided at the base end of the input shafts 51, 61 for opening the bypass line when moved backward, and base shafts 53, 63 whose front ends are continuously provided on the poppets 52, 62, which have the same shaft diameters as the input shafts 51, 61, and whose rear ends are placed in the atmosphere.
