PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water leakage detector for an EGR cooler capable of accurately detecting water leakage of the water cooling type EGR cooler. SOLUTION: The water leakage detector for the EGR cooler detects water leakage of the water cooling type EGR cooler. Specifically, a first water leakage determination means determines whether or not there is a possibility that water leakage may occur in the EGR cooler based on exhaust gas components. When it is determined that there is a possibility of the water leakage by the first water leakage determination means, the second water leakage determination means performs water pressure control to make the water pressure of cooling water passing through the EGR cooler lower than the pressure of EGR gas, and determines whether or not water leakage occurs based on exhaust gas components when the water pressure control is preformed. Thus, water leakage of the EGR cooler can be accurately detected, and failure of an engine etc. caused by water leakage can be effectively prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
