PURPOSE: To more efficiently remove nitrogen oxide from an oxygen excessive exhaust gas using a catalyst excellent in durability without using a reducing agent such as ammonia or the like. CONSTITUTION: Nitrogen oxide in exhaust gas is removed by bringing, an oxygen excessive exhaust gas containing nitrogen oxide and a hydrocarbon into contact with a catalyst obtained by adding at least one kind of a transition metal to zeolite with an SiO2 /Al2 O3 mol ratio of 20-100 having an FER structure.
