The insulating covering of a wire 26 travelling in a vertical direction is marked with three continuous spiral stripes, which may be of different colours, by three inking members mounted on a belt-driven rotor 38 rotating about an axis coincident with the longitudinal axis of the wire. The wire is guided in its vertical path by a stator 20 which is secured to the horizontal base 22 through which the wire passes and carries a guiding member 28. The stator, which is bored to accommodate equiangularly spaced ink-conducting connectors and passages 32, 30, 36, mounts the rotor 38 on ballbearings 40, 42 whilst the rotor itself is bored to provide passages 48, 46 through which the ink is conducted from the associated connectors and passages in the stator to inking members 74 or 76 housed in a rotor head 62 which is bolted to the rotor. The ink passes from the stator passages 36 to the rotor passages 48 through annular passages 54 located between the stator and rotor, such passages being delineated by annular channel members 52 secured to the inner wall of the rotor. Each member 52 accommodates a leather sealing strip 56 which is held against the stator by a spring steel strip 58, any ink leakage from a passage 54 into the associated members 52 causing the seal to function more effectively. The marking of the wire may be effected by inking nozzles 74 or inking wheels 76 as required, the needle-valve controlled and longitudinally adjustable units 72 carrying the nozzles or wheels being interchangeable in the one head 62. A rotor head 90 (not shown) may be used which is only capable of mounting inking nozzles. The invention is not limited to three inking members and it is not necessary to space the inking members equi-angularly around the rotor head. The channel members 52 may be fixed to the stator instead of the rotor, each sealing strip 56 in this case bearing against the rotor. |
