Polymerization products of olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons are produced by adding the components of a catalyst mixture (a) and (b) to the reaction chamber separately and continously at the rate at which the polymerization proceeds, the catalyst mixture consisting of (a) a metal, a metal hydrocarbon or a metal hydride; and (b) a compound of the general formula MXm or MOnXp, where M is a metal of Groups Ib, IVa, Va, VIa, or VIII or mercury, O is oxygen, X halogen or another monovalent substituent, m is the valency of the metal, n is 1 or 2 and p is 1, 2, 3 or 4. The polymerization may be carried out in an inert organic liquid and may be fully continuous. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylenes and mixtures thereof, butadiene, methyl butadienes, styrene and its alkyl derivatives. |
