Nitro derivatives of aromatic compounds, including heterocyclic compounds of aromatic character, are prepared by reacting the aromatic compound with a nitrating agent in a liquid sulphur dioxide medium. Suitable nitrating agents are, for example, mixtures of (a) nitric acid and sulphur trioxide, (b) nitric acid and sulphuric acid, (c) nitric acid and oleum, and (d) nitrogen tetroxide and boron trifluoride. Examples are given of the nitration of (1) benzoic acid to give mainly m-nitrobenzoic acid; (2) chlorobenzene to give p- and o-nitrochlorobenzene; (c) phenol to give 2,4,6-tri-nitrophenol; and (d) toluene to give 2,4-di-nitrotoluene. Other compounds which may be nitrated by the process are naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, thiophene, pyridine, furan and quinoline and derivatives thereof. |
