A furnace for cracking liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons, e.g. to make olefins or acetylenes, comprises two heat regenerative masses 11, 12, having flues 14, a combustion chamber 13 between the masses, and baffle means 40 in the chamber to deflect gases flowing across the chamber from one mass to the other into a vertical path. The furnace is operated on the reverse flow principle. The chamber may have one baffle, see, e.g., Fig. 4, surmounted by checkerwork 41 with flues 42, or two, see, e.g., ' Figs. 1 to 3 (not shown), in which the gases are deflected laterally as well as vertically. Figs. 5, 6 and 11 (not shown) are self-explanatory, but in Fig. 6 the arrangement of burners (75, 76) in the combustion chamber is such as to cause the gases to flow additionally in a circular path in a horizontal plane at the top of the chamber. In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the upper parts of the baffles have angled slots (83) and in Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) horizontal walls (88, 89) are included in the baffle means to cause horizontal flow in the upper part (19) of the chamber
