摘要 Discrete (nanogram) samples of organic materials are volatilized, and trace molecules of the samples are converted to ions by ion-molecule reactions, the ions being subject to a drift field and analyzed by a mass analyzer. The ions passed to the mass analyzer may be subjected to preliminary separating, filtering and focusing. The mass analyzer output device may include an electron multiplier and a multichannel analyzer. Mass analyzer is performed under high-vacuum conditions, while ion formation and drift take place under relatively high-pressure conditions.
