Phenanthrotriazolyl cpds useful as optical brighteners for plastics and for cotton, wool and esp fibre-forming polymers e.g. polyamides, polyesters, cellulose triacetate, etc have the formula (where R1 is H, Cl, F, CN, carboxy, sulpho, opt substd carbamoyl, or sulphamoyl, carboxylic ester or sulphonic ester, alkylsulphonyl or arylsulphonyl; R2 is H F, Cl, Cn, opt substd alkyl or aryl, carboxy, sulpho, or opt substd sulphamoyl; R3 is H or alkyl, R4 is H, sulpho, sulphonic ester or opt substd sulphamoyl).
