PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain an alkylene sulfide excellent in reactivity, useful as a raw material for medicines, agrochemicals and various industrial chemicals stably over a long period. CONSTITUTION: This alkylene sulfide of formula I (R<1> , R<2> , R<3> and R<4> are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, etc.) is obtained by intramolecular dehydration of a mercaptoalkanol of formula II in the presence of an acidic dehydrating catalyst such as sulfur or phosphoric acid in at leas one kind of solvent selected form among compounds bearing amido group with the N-site replaced with 1-6C hydrocarbon residue, compounds bearing nonsubstituted amido group, compound bearing ureylene group with the N-site replaced with 1-6C hydrocarbon reside and compounds bearing nonsubstituted ureylene group. It is preferable that the boiling point tb( deg.C) of the solvent under the reaction pressure set in the reaction process and the reaction temperature T( deg.C) satisfy the relationship: (tb-30)<=T<=tb. |
