Carbonaceous insertion compounds have the formula A x Si y C 1-y O z wherein A is an alkali metal eg.Li inserted in the compound, x,y and z are >0,y is >0<1 and the ratio z/y is >0<4 and the x-ray diffraction pattern of the compound resembles amorphous SiO. The compounds are prepared by pyrolysis of a polymeric precursor eg. 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane optionally containing a second polymer eg. an epoxy novolac and a hardener at eg. 1000{C.
