An internal combustion engine has a reciprocating piston with piston rings sealing it to the cylinder. The cylinder walls are lubricated by oil from the crankcase which is removed by a wiper ring below the piston rings. The wiper ring has a recess (16) set back from the cylinder walls between upper and lower wiping surfaces (17, 18). The boundary of this recess is a series of sawteeth one side (21) of which is parallel to the axis of the cylinder and the other side (22) of which is at an angle to this. The saw teeth on the upper and lower sides are displaced circumferentially relatively to each other.
