<p>The machine comprises a horizontal driving roll forming a nip with a contr-rotating carrier roll. A sheet of leather is passed through the nip to have one side scraped by blades of a working roll while the other side of the sheet is backed by the carrier roll. The carrier roll can be swung away from the other two by its axis pivoting about a parallel axis. As the carrier roll is swung back to clamp the sheet against the driving roll, the driving roll rotation is changed progressively from free rotation to synchronous with that of the carrier roll, nip pressure being gradually increased to maximum as full synchronism is achieved. The progressive achievement of synchronism between driving and carrier rolls, coupled with graduated reapplication of nip pressure as the rolls are closed, ensured that the leather is not damaged when the sheet is turned.</p> |
