In order to generate, on plastic surfaces, strongly adhesive metal layers by electroless metal deposition, the plastic surfaces are first provided with micropores by oxidative etching and are made polar. After rinsing, the surfaces are then subjected to a reductive secondary treatment consisting of two steps, to remove oxidant residues and by-products of the oxidation process which may have an adverse effect on the subsequent electroless metal deposition. In the first step, a solution is used which contains a reducing compound such as hydroxylamine or alkali metal hypophosphite, but not hydrazine or a hydrazine compound, while the second step is carried out with a solution which contains hydrazine or a hydrazine compound, e.g. hydrazine hydrate as the reductant.
|
