In the manufacture of basic aluminium chloride and/or basic aluminium sulphate chloride from aluminium raw material, aluminium chloride and optionally a water-soluble sulphate together with a quantity of water at least corresponding to the number of moles of chloride to be removed from the aluminium chloride may be heated to a temperature of 100-700`C. The duration of the heating treatment depends on the temperature selected, so as to obtain a crystalline basic aluminium chloride or a cry basic aluminium sulphate chloride of the desired basicity. The method may also be applied in the manufacture of substantially iron-free basic aluminium chloride and/or basic aluminium sulphate chloride from iron-containing bauxite, shale or other iron containing aluminium minerals, wherein is involved a precipitation of an aluminium sulphate chloride of low iron content with hydro-chloric acid gas. Hydrochloric acid gas released during the heating process is returned to the precipitation stage. |
