PURPOSE: To uniformly disperse a raw material of a catalyst layer to enhance the sheet forming capability, and surly form a three-dimensional reaction site in the catalyst layer to improve the electrode characteristics by adding a viscosity increasing agent or the viscosity increasing agent and a nonionic surfactant to a raw material mixed solution when the catalyst layer is formed. CONSTITUTION: A fuel cell electrode is prepared by forming a catalyst layer containing catalyst particles, a polytetrafluoroethylene family polymer, and a polymer electrolyte on a gas diffusion layer. The catalyst layer is formed in such a way that a viscosity increasing agent or the viscosity increasing agent and a nonionic surfactant are mixed to a mixed solution of the catalyst particles and polytetrafluoroethylene family polymer dispersion, the mixture is heat-treated, then coated with the polymer electrolyte. As the viscosity increasing agent, carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose, casein, polyvinyl alcohol, ammonium polyacrylate, and starch are listed. |
