The method makes it possible to determine, during precision cutting, the deflection (f) adopted by the wire at a given instant (t1) without resorting to mechanical or optical measurement of the curvature which it adopts between the guides supporting it. For this purpose, the difference between the speed of progression (VG) of these guides and the machining speed (VU) is integrated, this integration being performed between the said given instant (t1) and a moment (to) when the deflection has a zero value. The machining speed may be determined at every instant from the instantaneous value of the machining current. <IMAGE>
