PURPOSE:To attain proper discrimination even at special reproduction by providing a function discriminating automatically to which FM standard a reproduced signal belongs with respect to signals recorded by two kinds of different FM standards. CONSTITUTION:At the special reproduction, a tri-state input type is employed for a level comparator, outputs of smoothing devices 1, 2 are used as the 1st and 2nd inputs, a reference voltage set separately is used as the 3rd input to apply tri-state level comparison. When the 1st input is largest, the first output of the comparator is brought into a high level and the 2nd output is brought into a low level, and when the 2nd input is largest, the 1st output is brought into a low level and the 2nd output is brought into a high level, and then when the 3rd input is largest, both the 1st and 2nd outputs are brought into a low level. Then a flip-flop circuit 8 with set/reset input using the 1st and 2nd outputs of the comparator 6 as the two inputs is placed at the post-stage of the comparator 6 and its output is used as the output of the signal discriminator.
