The monorail rails employed in underground mining and tunnelling have to be brought to the surface at regular intervals for checking and straightening. For this purpose, use is made of an apparatus, the straightening plate and straightening body of which are associated with a common supporting framework which, overall, forms a straightening column in which is arranged a vertically acting hydraulic pressure ram. This pressure ram is connected to an electrohydraulic pump and is supplied with pressure medium by the latter in such a way that the piston rod can act with the straightening body arranged on it on the bent monorail rail, which is as far as possible fixed within the supporting framework. The straightening plate is arranged so as to lie on the horizontal supports and projects beyond the straightening column on both sides. The necessary forces can be taken by the robust straightening plate itself, and the use of pressure-compensating rails allows even higher forces to be accepted and directed into the straightening column. By virtue of the special design and the possibility of carrying out the necessary checking at the same time in a straightening column of this kind, it is possible to reduce to a minimum the proportion of monorail rails which have to be returned to the manufacturer for checking, and the majority of monorail rails brought to the surface can be checked and straightened in the immediate vicinity of the shaft and then taken back underground immediately. <IMAGE>
