A device for projecting a patterned image onto an object lying within the field of view of a focus detector, which device is such that the image (Fig. 2) projected is sub-divided into bright portions (22) of differing intensity. The device may include a patterned chart (12) (Figure 1, not shown) that is illuminated non-uniformly. Alternatively the device may include a chart which is itself luminant, and includes thus light emitting diodes having differing light output. Preferably the device is such that a central portion (21) of the image (22) is brighter than the surrounding area of the image (22). <IMAGE>
