PURPOSE: To accurately set the width and reference coordinate positions of a matter to be printed by automatically detecting the width and position before the start of the printing. CONSTITUTION: A printing monitoring device which displays the video of a moving printed matter 20 taken with a video camera 1 on a TV monitor 7 as a still picture by irradiating the matter 20 with light from a stroboscope is provided with the video camera 1 which can be moved within a fixed extent in the width direction of the matter 20, binarization circuit 3 which binarizes video signals into white and black signals based on a threshold, and switch 4 which selectively operates the circuit 3. The monitoring device reads the coordinate positions of the left and right edges of the matter 20 from the present locations of the camera 1 when the half or more of scanning lines becomes white and black by moving the camera 1 when the circuit 3 is operated, calculates the width of the matter 20 based on the two coordinate position values, and initializes the width and width-direction origin of the matter 20. |
