PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce residual sulfur concentration in the gas to be cleaned to a very low level, to operate a catalyst bed even at a high load factor of free sulfur and to operate the whole process at a low cost. SOLUTION: A final cleaning bed 3 is a filter bed 3 comprising a granular adsorbent different from a catalyst 2 and used for adsorbing free sulfur. The gas flowed from a catalyst 2 bed into the filter bed 3 contains at least 250 mg/Nm<3> -gas free sulfur and the temperature of the gas is 20-180 deg.C. The desulfurized gas containing not more than 30% of the free sulfur content of the gas flowed into the filter bed 3 is withdrawn from the filter bed 3.
