PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately control air fuel ratio even if exhaust gas quantity changes. SOLUTION: Target air fuel ratio correction quantityλ<SB>TG</SB>for performing feedback control of target air fuel ratioλ<SB>M</SB>according to air fuel ratio in a downstream side of a catalyst is set according to engine speed Ne and intake air pressure PM. The target air fuel ratio correction quantityλ<SB>TG</SB>is a parameter determining response speed of target air fuel ratio feed back control. Even if exhaust gas quantity changes and response speed of air fuel ratio in the down stream side changes, response speed of target air fuel ratio feed back control is set in an optimum value and air fuel ratio can be accurately controlled since the target air fuel ratio correction quantityλ<SB>TG</SB>is set according to the parameter (engine speed Ne and intake air pressure PM) relating to exhaust gas quantity.
