A composition comprising chebulic acid is provided to show excellent diabetes and diabetic complications inhibitory effect with secured safety due to be derived from a natural plant, thereby being widely used as a raw material of health functional foods and medicines. A composition for preventing or treating diabetes and diabetic complications comprises chebulic acid as an effective ingredient, wherein the chebulic acid is derived from Terminalia chebula. A method for preparing the composition comprises the steps of: (a) obtaining an alcohol extract of Terminalia chebula; (b) extracting the alcohol extract using at least one organic solvent in sequence in accordance with polarities; and (c) subjecting an organic solvent extract obtained from the step(b) to a gel filtration chromatography. Further, the composition for preventing or treating diabetes and diabetic complications is reacted as kinetics preventing a generation of an advanced glycation end-product.
