PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a carbon nanofiber with an improved wettability with a matrix material, the carbon nanofiber, a manufacturing method of a carbon fiber composite material using the carbon nanofiber, and the carbon fiber composite material. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the carbon nanofiber comprises a step of subjecting an untreated carbon nanofiber, which is manufactured by a vapor growth method, to a pulverization treatment. In the pulverization treatment step, the tap density of the carbon nanofiber after the pulverization treatment is from 1.5 to 10 times larger than that of the carbon nanofiber before the pulverization treatment. The manufacturing method of the carbon fiber composite material comprises a step of mixing the carbon nanofiber 40 into an elastomer 30 and uniformly dispersing the same in the elastomer 30 by shear force to obtain the carbon fiber composite material.
