The present invention relates to an electronic device and a method for processing image data in the electronic device. According to an embodiment, the electronic device comprises: a display functionally connected to the electronic device; and a central terminal unit (CTU) block including at least one control unit (CU) with image data. Image data is divided based on the average CU depth of the CTU block, and the divided image data is encoded and saved in one file. A processor may be included which is set to decode the divided image data encoded to form one file and output the same on the display. Other embodiments can also be available. The objective of the present invention is to provide the electronic device and the method for processing image data in the electronic device capable of encoding and decoding high resolution image data which is not naturally available in the electronic device, by using a H/W encoding/decoding unit.
