A hair curler comprises at least one inner flanged member in the form of a hollow sleeve 3 rotatably mounted within an apertured tubular body 1, the member 3 having flexible projections 10 which, on relative rotation of the body and the member, pass from a withdrawn position therebetween, through the apertures in the body to secure hair wound thereon. Slots in flanges 4 of the members 3 engage headed pins 8 on end walls 5 of the body to limit rotation and the members 3 may be apertured to permit flow of air and liquids. The projections 10 extend in different directions in different parts of the curler and different parts of the surface 11 of the body has hair-engaging serrations or bristles 12 extending in opposite directions to ensure a firm initial grip on the hair. In modifications the curlers are conical or frustro-conical, the inner member is an apertured solid body or extends the entire length of the body or, as shown in Fig. 7, the curler stands vertically on the scalp, a spiral 15 moulded on to the bottom of the inner member being wound about the tress when the inner member is rotated to secure the curler in position. The body and the inner member or members are preferably formed of a synthetic plastic, the spikes being integral with the inner member which has helical grooves to accommodate the spikes in the withdrawn position. |
