[Also in Division F2] A hydraulic liquid reservoir for supplying hydraulic liquid to a master cylinder comprises a substantially airtight container at least part of which is resilient, an outlet from the container being normally sealed by a valve or closure member which is adapted to be opened by a coacting member on the master cylinder when the reservoir is connected to the latter. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a boss 16 is welded to the top surface 15 of the master cylinder 12 and comprises a lip 23 over which a resilient portion 31 of the reservoir 25 can be fitted. The reservoir 25 also comprises a rigid body portion 28 having a flange 29 to which is secured flange 27 of a resilient portion 26 which is maintained against the surface of the liquid in the reservoir by atmospheric pressure. An internal annulus 32 of the rigid portion 28 is apertured at 33 to provide an outlet for the fluid, this outlet being normally closed by a valve 36, urged into closed position by a spring 38, but opened when the reservoir is attached to the master cylinder by the engagement of valve stem 35 with the top surface 15. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, a threaded boss 42 is secured to the top surface on the master cylinder and receives in screwthreaded engagement therewith a rigid screwthreaded lower end portion 52 of a resilient container 49 which is urged towards its collapsed state by a spring 58 interposed between its upper end and surrounding strap 55. A seal 53 normally traps hydraulic liquid in the container and prevents it from being collapsed, but is adapted to be pierced, when the container is screwed into the boss 42 by a projection 48 which is carried by the boss 42, to allow the liquid to flow into the master cylinder. The spring 58 may be dispensed with by moulding the container 49 in its collapsed state and of resilient material whereby it is self-collapsing. In the modification of Fig. 8, a rigid container 62 has disposed within it a resilient bag 67 which is sealed at its lower end to the screw-threaded lower portion 63 of the container 62, bleed holes 66 allowing atmospheric air to act on the upper surface of the bag 67 to cause it to collapse when liquid is withdrawn from the outlet 68. |
