A slide 18 which is angularly adjustable in a vertical plane in a machine tool is provided with balancing means, the slide carrying a curved track 36 along which an attachment point 26 for a balancing means is adjusted in response to angular movement of the slide. The slide 18 carries a milling spindle 20, the axis of which passes through the centre of angular adjustment of the slide. The slide guides are mounted on a column 10 or on a slide thereon and the column is carried on a slide 12. The attachment member 26 engaging the guide 36 supports a chain 24 attached to a counterweight piston 31. The member 26 is held in a vertical path by a roller engaging a track 54. |
