[Also in Division C7] A submerged arc-welding flux comprises: (a) Al 2 O 3 (b) ZrO 2 or MgO and (c) fluoride of Ca, Na, Al or Mg, in a weight proportion of (a) - from 0À7 : 1 to 1À4 : 1 and (b) (b) - from 0À7 :1 to 1À4 :1, the total of (c) components (a), (b) and (c) being not less than 70% by weight and the balance containing 0-6% by weight of Si in Si containing compounds. The MgO used is preferably formed from calcined or dead burnt magnesite and the Si if present is in the form of SiO 2 , silicates of Al, Mg, Ca, Zr or as the binder sodium silicate. The flux may be formed by fusing a mixture of the constituents and crushing the fused mass to the required size or preferably by mixing with a sodium silicate binder, heating and tumbling to granulate. The following flux compositions are specified as examples: The flux is used in submerged arc-welding either as granules with a solid electrode or as a filler in a tube electrode. The electrode has the following composition in weight per cent: 0À07-0À10 C, 1À25-1À45 Mn, 0À5-0À6 Si, 1À7-2 Ni, 0À6-0À7 Mo, up to 0À01 S and up to 0À01 P with the balance Fe. The composition of the weld metal produced is in weight per cent: up to 0À08 C, 0À75-1À05 Mn, up to 0À6 Si, 1À5-2 Ni and up to 0À7 Mo with the balance Fe. The electrode may also include 0À1-1À5% Mg as a deoxidizer and desulphurizer either as a coating or preferably with the flux in the tubular electrode.
