Extended or plasticized compositions of chlorinated polyethylene are produced by adding a heat stabilizer to chlorinated polyethylene containing 20 to 48 weight per cent of chlorine, having an intrinsic viscosity of 2.5 to 6.0 in o-dichlorobenzene at 100 DEG C., and being derived by chlorination of linear polyethylene of molecular weight 700,000 to 5,000,000, and intimately mixing the heat stabilized chlorinated polyethylene with an extender or plasticizer at 200 DEG to 400 DEG F. Specified extenders and plasticizers are aromatic and naphthenic oils, chlorinated aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, epoxidized oils and esters of phthalic, adipic, sebacic phosphoric and benzoic acids. Specified stablizers are salts and complexes of barium, cadmium, tin, zinc, lead and sodium, and epoxy resins. The compositions may also comprise fillers, e.g. carbon black, silica, titanium dioxide, mica, clays, talc and magnesium and calcium carbonates; curing agents, e.g. peroxides and polyfunctional amines, preferably together with sulphur or a sulphur compound such as dipentamethylene thiuram tetrasulphide, benzothiazyl disulphide and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, or magnesium, zinc or lead oxides. The products may be used for jacketing wires. Many suitable components are listed and examples describe compositions comprising chlorinated polyethylenes, epichlorohydrin/Bisphenol A condensates and chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons together with various conventional compounding ingredients and curing agents. |
