Composition preventing decarburisation of high speed steels and other tool steels during thermal treatments or heating prior to deforming consists of (in %) boron-containing enamel frit 15-95; potassium feldspar 0-30, quartz silica gravel or flint, 1-70; clay and/or bentonite 2-15; calcium carbonate 0-60; barium carbonate 0-60; magnesium carbonate 0-10; magnesium oxide 0-5, and graphite 0-15. Up to 60% of the boron-containing enamel frit can be replaced by hard glass powder. The composition is applied in the form of an aqs. slurry. The presence of boron oxide ensures a good adhesion to the substrate.
