The anti-theft device includes a portable package (14) which contains a transmitter (10) of encoded radio or infrared signals for a receiver (12) which operates a relay circuit (13) for locking and unlocking the doors, and which is also connected to the electronic management system (28) of the engine (30). The package also incorporates a detector circuit (24) for the magnetic field of a magnet (26) sited within the vehicle and close to the recess (16) into which the package is fitted. This circuit inhibits the transmission of the code for authorisation of engine starting whenever the package is taken out of its recess.
