Yarn or a yarn cable is dyed or otherwise treated by liquid whilst wound in a cylindrical package maintained under axial force whilst dyeing &c., rinsing and centrifuging, and thus unwound in the moist state dried in a continuous manner and wound up in separate yarns. If desired steaming or other treatment may be practised before the rewinding. The yarn may be wound without a twist and may be under tension, for example being led round a roller braked by magnetic hysteresis. A bobbin suitable for holding the package comprises a spring tube 8a which is extended by tube 10a during winding and which contracts to urge end planes 9 into the package when the bobbin is removed from the winder.
