PURPOSE: To produce a cross-linked polysaccharide free of unreacted substances, high in safety and biocompatibility, and useful as a medical material by irradiating an ionizing radiation-reactive polysaccharide with an ionizing radiation. CONSTITUTION: An ionizing radiation-reactive polysaccharide having a polysaccharide (biocompatible polysaccharide such as glycosaminoglycan is pref.) bonded to at least 1 ionizing radiation-reactive compd. (compd. low in toxicity and little in side effect even when used as a medical material is pref., examples of which include cinnamic acid and coumarin) via covalent bonds is irradiated with an ionizing radiation to bring about a mutual cross-linking reaction of ionizing radiation-reactive compd. residues to produce a cross-linked polysaccharide. The cross-linked polysaccharide free of unreacted substances causative of a side effect, etc., high in safety and biocompatibility, and useful as a medical material is obtd. according to the foregoing procedure. |
