The present invention relates to a parking payment system comprising a parking fee register in which information is held concerning the vehicles which have been connected up to the system and for which a parking fee is paid, and in which system the user is billed in arrears for the parking on the basis of the information in the parking fee register. In order to improve user friendliness, the system comprises a remote-reading device 20 arranged close to a parking area and comprising reading members 21 for machine-reading of a vehicle-specific vehicle identification from a vehicle-specific registering element 24 and transmitter members 23, 26 for sending a registration message containing the vehicle identification to the parking fee register in order to record the time of the beginning and end of the parking. <IMAGE>
