摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To obtain uniform electrooptic characteristics having an excellent orientation state by periodically providing ruggedness inclined in one direction onto the substrate surface of an electrooptic device for which a ferroelectric liquid crystal is used and compensating the pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules. CONSTITUTION:This electrooptic device holds the ferroelectric liquid crystal 8 in place between two sheets of the substrates 1 and 6 facing each other and controls the orientation of the ferroelectric liquid crystal by the substrate surface effect. The ruggedness inclined in one direction is periodically provided on the substrate surface of such electrooptic device and the angle of inclination thereof is set at such an angle as to compensate the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules to obtain the electrooptic device in which the entire part of the liquid crystal layer is apparently uniformly oriented in a horizontal state. More specifically, striped transparent electrodes 2 are patterned on the glass substrate 1 and thereafter, an insulating film 3 is formed thereon. An oriented film 4 is diagonally deposited thereon by evaporation at 60 deg. angle from the direction normal to the substrate to form the ruggedness having 12-16 deg. angle from the substrate surface. Such substrate is combined with a substrate 6 formed thereon with the striped transparent electrodes 5 and the liquid crystal 8 is sealed therebetween.</p>
