A description is given of a device for objective determination of visual acuity, which has an illuminating light source whose light can be focused onto the fundus of the eye. The device according to the invention has a scanning device which produces a scanning movement of the light beam of the illuminating light source at least over a part of the fundus of the eye and has beam-deflecting and beam-projecting optical elements, a detector device which receives light reflected on the fundus of the eye, and a control and evaluation unit which produces from the temporary sequential output signal of the detector device an image of the fundus of the eye, and which switches the illuminating light source between at least two stages of perception and, in particular, brightness in such a way that a pattern is projected onto the fundus of the eye.
