PURPOSE:To obtain glyceric acid or its salt selectively from glycerol by a method of much high safety and no pollution. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous glycerol solution of 5 to 90wt.% is adjusted in its pH to 8 to 13 and an oxygen-containing gas is introduced into the solution as the temperature is maintained at 20 to 50 deg.C. The resultant glyceric acid salt is acidified unto free glyceric acid, if necessary, or subjected to salt interchange reaction. Or an oxygen-containing gas is passed through the 5 to 90wt.% aqueous glyceric acid solution in the presence of a Pt catalyst as the reaction mixture is kept at less than 7 pH and 20 to 80 deg.C temperature. The resultant free glyceric acid is, if needed, neutralized into a glycerate, which is, if further desired, subjected to salt interchange reaction to give free DL-glyceric acid or its salt. |
