HYDROPHOBIC METAL OXIDE POWDER AND DEVELOPING AGENT FOR ELECTROPHOTOGRAPHY CONTAINING THE POWDER

PURPOSE: To improve the hydrophobic property, electrostatic charge stability and environmental stability of a metal oxide by treating the oxide with a specific amino-substituted silane compound. CONSTITUTION: A hydrophobic metal oxide powder having a hydrophobic ratio (transmission method) of >=60% is produced by dropping or spraying an amino- substituted silane compound of the formula R<1> R<2> N(CH2 )n SiXm Y3-m (R<1> and R<2> are each H or a 3-10C alkyl; R<1> and R<2> area not H at the same time; when R<1> or R<2> is an alkyl, it may contain a group VIB atom in the main chain; X is a 1-3C alkoxy; Y is a 1-3C alkyl or phenyl; (n) is 2-4; (m) is 1-3) to a metal oxide while vigorously agitating the oxide by a mechanical means and heating the oxide at 100-300 deg.C in nitrogen atmosphere to complete the reaction and remove the solvent.
