The control device has a targetting and/or viewing device, for determining the angular position of each person to be rescued and supplying a corresponding control signal to a microprocessor. A range measuring device determines the distance between a reference point on the rescue vehicle and each person to be rescued, to provide a second control signal for the microprocessor, for control of the rescue ladder or platform etc., with a display indicating when the calculated target point is reached.
