<p>The invention relates to a transgenic non-human animal containing null alleles of GFAP and vimentin. It also relates to tissue, astrocyte containing cultures, and cells from said animal. Furthermore, the invention relates to use of said animal, tissue, astrocyte containing cultures, and cells for the study of volume regulation by astrocytes in cytotoxic oedema in the CNS, such as hypoxia-induced oedema. It also relates to use of these materials for testing the effect of different drugs which may modulate hypoxia-induced cytotoxic oedema in the CNS, other cytotoxic oedema in the CNS. The transgenic non-human animal is preferably a mammal, more preferably a rodent and most preferably a mouse.</p> |
